Beating Thrush: A Poem About Victory

August 18, 2014 by Laura 3 Comments

Today’s (very creative) guest post is from Shary who blogs at Atta Mama. She is sharing her long battle with thrush through a poem because you might as well lighten the mood a little when things get tough!

beatingthrush

My baby is new.
She’s just arrived!
We’re all bundled up;
I’m glowing inside.
My breasts are filling –
Milk they do give.
I’m just feeding my baby…
From me she will live!
It was all going great.
Her latch seems just fine.
Yet I’m calling the midwife,
“My nipples itch all the time.”
Just a few more days
And “uh-oh” gets much worse.
The itch is a burn.
When she latches I curse!
Diflucan sucked.
Niastatin is too sweet.
Yeast thrives on that stuff…
It can’t be beat.
(Or so I thought.)
But I had a plan.
Probiotics, extracts, oils,
and all the vinegar I could stand!
Months down the drain,
Money was spent.
Tears were shed,
and I needed to vent.
But I freakin’ did it.
A battle was fought.
But give up breastfeeding?
I think not!

I’m Shary and I’ve had thrush for a total of 5 months. Thrush is essentially a yeast infection in your nipples and in your baby’s mouth. Adults can get thrush in their mouths as well, though that is normally something as a result of an underlying issue. Combined with both of my children, my candida issues got out of hand as they were each in their infancy. The second time was a dream in comparison, but sometimes there is just nothing you can do aside from altering your diet and a strict protocol. Beating the yeast beast is a difficult task!

You can read more about my battles with thrush on my blog, Atta Mama. I am also on social media should you decide to stalk me further. Try me on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram.

Love this!!! I mean the poem, not that you battled thrush! :o) I somehow escaped thrush with the triplets…not sure *how* but I am so grateful! 🙂

it’s good to cleanse with vinegar using a swab and/or mix two tablespoons in apple or cranberry juice to restore pH, especially if you are a bather and take pro-biotic supplements (best from cold fridge section of your natural food store) rather than just eating the active yogurts. you can use the yogurt to soothe baby by applying it directly into diaper til symptoms appear gone.
