Ingredient labels can be so hard to decipher sometimes. I’ve gotten in the habit of reading ingredient labels on the foods that we purchase and the body products we use (Have you taken my #PureBodyChallenge?) But the labels on household cleaning products are the worst! They don’t even need to include all of the ingredients on them. There may even be different listings of ingredients whether they are “active” or “inactive” and it can get really confusing. Household cleaning products and air fresheners are full of things I don’t want to be ingesting or breathing in because they are often full of respiratory irritants and neurotoxins. People used to clean their houses before all of these synthetic chemicals were produced so I just don’t think they are necessary in order to thoroughly clean and disinfect!
DIY non toxic cleaning recipes might seem like a lot of extra work but I assure you it is easy and you only need a few key ingredients. As an Earth Mama Ambassador, I’ve been challenged to see how many products in my household I can replace with Earth Mama Angel Baby products. Since they are made for use as personal care products that part has been easy by swapping out our soaps and lotions. But I really want to challenge myself by using them other than on our bodies.
I’ve got two awesome cleaning recipes where you can use your Earth Mama Angel Baby castile soaps. Not only are they made with totally safe ingredients but they REALLY get the job done and are a fraction of the cost of store bought cleaning products when you mix them with just a few things you’ll already have in your kitchen.
Earth Mama Household Scrub
This household scrub is perfect to replace the toxic store bought scrubs which rate a “D” (think grade school A-F grading) on the Environmental Working Group’s Guide To Healthy Cleaning where you can look up how eco-friendly and safe your household cleaning products are. It is easily made with your favorite Earth Mama Angel Baby castile soap and a few other ingredients you already have in your kitchen. It is perfect for scrubbing sinks, tubs, counter tops, floors or any where that needs a little added shine. It is easy on my husband’s asthma because there are no harsh ingredients and smells amazing with their scented soaps (and a little extra essential oils if you have them)!
- 1 cup of baking soda
- 1/8-1/4 cup of any Earth Mama pure castile soap (I used Calming Lavender)
- 1 Tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar (optional) (I used vinegar, hello science class volcano project when you add it to the baking soda!)
- 3-5 drops essential oils (try anti-bacterial lavender or tea tree, or fresh lemon, orange or peppermint) (I used 5 drops of peppermint)
Mix all ingredients together to a creamy, frosting consistency and safely scrub away!
I put this cleaner to the test on our shower doors. I hate the film that builds up on them but even more than that I hate using chemical cleaning products because they make me nauseous when I use them or make my husband need to use his inhaler if he is using them.
The before picture is extra scummy because I wanted to really put this household scrub to the test so I didn’t wipe down the glass last week.
Just look at this before and after! I love that it is completely safe and non-toxic but also how effective it is! The entire time I was cleaning I kept thinking how heavenly it smelled. With the lavender from the soap and the added peppermint essential oil it was like a mini-aromatherapy session. This recipe went a long way too. I was able to clean our standing shower & separate tub, our daughter’s shower/tub, and both bathroom sinks and toilets.
Earth Mama has shared the above recipe on their blog which also has a cute video of Mama’s granddaughter mixing up the scrub.
Now that you know how to make a non-toxic cleaning scrub I’ve also got a recipe for reusable cleaning wipes!
Non Toxic Reusable Cleaning Wipes
The regular brand store bought cleaning wipes also rate a “D” from the Environment Working Group so they have got to go! I just don’t want to be putting my hands on them or wiping down surfaces that my baby is going to be touching and then putting her hands in her mouth. Plus it seems pretty silly to me to grab a cleaning wipe and then have to clean my hands from touching the wipe because of the chemicals.
I decided to make these super safe, deliciously smelling, non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning wipes to ditch all those expensive and toxic wipes found at the store. I love the convenience of cleaning wipes and that I can DIY them for a cheaper and more gentle, but equally effective alternative.
- Old t-shirts/baby washcloths/flannel blankets/sheets cut up in to squares (they don’t need to be perfect; I was able to fit 33 wipes in to the container) The size depends on your container. You will want them to be the same size as the bottom when they are folded in half.
- An old baby wipe container (or a large container will do but the baby wipe container is convenient for easy pull out)
- 3 cups warm water
- 1 1/2 cups vinegar
- 1/3 cup Earth Mama Angel Baby castile soap
- 15 drops essential oils (optional: lavender, tea tree, lemon, orange & peppermint are great choices)
Mix water, vinegar, Earth Mama castile soap and essential oils together. I used Orange Vanilla Angel Baby Wash soap and a mix of lemon and orange essential oils. Take your wipes and soak them in the solution until saturated. Gently press out any excess liquid. Fold wipes so they pop up out of the container as in diagram below. Pull and use when needed!
Voila! An easy, great smelling, non respiratory irritating cleaning wipe!
After Cleaning Relaxation For Mama
After a busy day of cleaning mama deserves to relax and re-moisturize. I recommend taking a relaxing bath with your favorite Earth Mama soap (mine is Happy Mama Ginger Grapefruit) and then lathering your skin with a gentle moisturizer like the Angel Baby Vanilla Orange.
