There are so many personal care products on the market that it can be overwhelming to find a good brand. Some brands have been around a long time but that doesn’t mean they are the best choice. When I really started investigating the ingredients in the brands that I used as a child and throughout adulthood I was not happy with the findings!
When I was pregnant with my first, I made a rule to only buy personal care products that contained minimal ingredients that were not harmful to our endocrine systems by causing hormone disruption, and that are also eco-friendly.
Here are a few quick tips for choosing the safest baby care products without doing hours of research:
1. Don’t be fooled by the word “natural”.
The marketing on the products is just that and buzz words can be used to grab your attention. If something is labeled as natural it may contain some really safe, natural ingredients but still contain other unnatural ingredients that you’ll want to avoid so always check the ingredient list.
2. If you can actually read the ingredients then they are likely safe.
This will help you knock out some synthetic chemicals which typically have multiple syllable names that are nearly impossible to pronounce. Some natural ingredients, however, may be listed with their latin or scientific name which can be difficult to read but there is usually the common name placed in parentheses.
3. The less ingredients the better.
Minimal ingredients means there aren’t a lot of unnecessary fillers. In my experience products with less ingredients are still just as effective as those with synthetic ones but aren’t full of junk!
One baby product that every parent I know purchases is baby wipes. As a cloth diapering family we also use cloth wipes, but about 50% of the time we are using disposable baby wipes for travel and convenience of clean up. On my cloth wipes I simply use water to quickly freshen my baby’s skin between diaper changes. Just using water has been really gentle and effective for diaper changes.
WaterWipes are the world’s purest baby wipes and they fit all of my rules for shopping for personal care products. With just TWO ingredients, 99.9% water and 0.1% grapefruit seed extract, you can feel confident that you are using the most gentle product on the market. There is nothing more natural than water to clean your baby’s skin and the grapefruit seed extract acts as a natural preservative so that these wipes can easily travel. The wipes themselves are very durable and we’ve been able to clean up some doozy diapers. (To any other Cystic Fibrosis mom’s reading this — you know that their #2’s are out of control some times, haha!).
I’m very excited to see WaterWipes appearing on the shelves of more of my favorite stores. They are now being sold at Walgreens which was super convenient for us the other day when we were running behind schedule (wait, isn’t that every day?) and I didn’t check the diaper bag before we left to make sure we had everything. Since we were passing a Walgreens I was able to quickly run in and grab some new WaterWipes packs. They had them available in single and triple packs. I loved not having to settle on another brand that I normally wouldn’t buy since WaterWipes are now more widely available.
Now that WaterWipes are available at Walgreens they want to make your shopping a little easier by giving FIVE $100 Walgreens gift cards away! You may enter through October 7 by completing the social media actions in the widget below. Good luck!
