I’m just so so in love with the new farmhouse style builtins around our fireplace (the sliding barn door still has me giddy!). This was a HUGE (YUGE, even) project for my husband and I to DIY because neither of us have any past wood working experience. Call us crazy, but we decided to buy the tools and try to do it ourselves to save (a lot of) money. Lucky for us, all worked out (though we did have our Contractor neighbor on stand-by in case we royally screwed something up, haha).
As we (slowly…) furnish and decorate our home we are going for the Modern Farmhouse look. I’ve always loved white in homes and am not afraid of having a lot of it around. It feels clean, crisp, and classy (I also love alliterations).
The before picture of this wall leaves a lot to be desired. There was no mantle, the “fake stone” that stuck to the wall was a little too wide, and the fireplace was actually a fire hazard overall so we really needed to make some safety changes. This was music to my ears though because that meant we got to make this look how we wanted! We hired professional stone masons to come renovate the fireplace and were so happy with the result. The gray is much more pleasing to me than the brown. But, much to my dismay we could not hang the TV over fireplace because this thing is really high powered. Like, it heats our whole house high powered. So, it would’ve melted the TV if we hung it above the fireplace.
This left me with a problem of where do we put the TV. We have limited free wall space and we wanted the fireplace to be the focus of the room so we wanted a way to hide it. I had researched TV lifts but as amazing as they are, they are out of budget for us right now. So, I figured what could be more Farmhouse-y than sliding barn doors? YES!
My amazing husband took my design and made it a reality. The sliding barn doors are perfect and they easily hide our TV (WARNING: toddlers love sliding them). There are plenty of shelves for decorating so it actually feels home-y in our living area.
On the left side the 6 cubbies on the bottom house my children’s toys so that they can easily and attractively be stored. And we have one more little project for that side which I’m SUPER excited about and I’ll reveal it once complete. But, trust me, its going to be amazing if it works as planned!
We found a bunch of tutorials on Pinterest and YouTube for such a project but the two that helped my husband the most were: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-kS53I4ikE and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=od7CSGZK6og(don’t mind the comments, the tutorial was still helpful haha).
I look forward to sharing more of our DIY projects as they are completed. Unfortunately for my husband my “Honey Do List” is now a mile long since this project turned out so beautifully. Once Spring arrives and we can get outside with the table saw and paint sprayer I plan to knock out a bunch more projects. I can hardly wait!
