I’ll just start this post off with a truth bomb: motherhood is hard. Finding a balance between mothering and life has been my biggest hardship since becoming a mom. I adore my children but constantly struggle with finding time for myself, especially fitness.
In the past my fitness activity of choice was usually a group class like cardio pilates or yoga. Our schedules don’t really allow the time for me to make it to a group fitness class since I am a full-time caregiver to my children as a stay-at-home-mom. I really needed to find a way to fit exercise back in to my life and be able to do it with kids around.
So if you are a busy mama trying to find time to get back to a more balanced, healthy lifestyle then I hope some of these tips will work for you.
Find Fitness Activities That You Can Do With Your Kids
- Living Room Workout – My kids actually really enjoy doing workout videos with me in the living room. I may not get a perfect workout in but we usually start off doing the videos together and them getting interested in playing with their toys while I finish. YouTube has some really great free workouts to do at home. I like Fitness Blender and a bunch of the Yoga videos to change up my own collection of workout DVDs.
- Have A Dance Party – This is a really fun way to burn off some calories and is always fun for kids. This is also my go-to change up when toddlers get cranky because they forget there was a problem.
- Get Outside – Children love being outside so going for a walk or run is the perfect way to stay active when you have your kids with you. Jogging strollers are great for mom’s who like to run. We only have a single jogging stroller so when I have both my kids we usually go for walks where my three year old rides her balance bike and I babywear my 1 year old in the Tula. Walking while carrying an extra 20lbs on my back is a great way to burn some extra calories.
- Play Sports – Teach your kids to play sports. My kids like running and kicking the soccer ball but they love when I play with them. We also have a trampoline in our yard which is a seriously good workout.
Keep Hydrated – Staying hydrated is so important for your body to function optimally. I’ve read its recommended to drink (in ounces) half of your bodyweight. Water is the healthiest beverage. I add fresh lemon and a pinch of sea salt to mine for some natural electrolytes.
Choose Healthy Snacks When On-The-Go – I’ve found that including protein and healthy fat in to every one of my meals and snacks keeps me feeling the most energized. Having snacks on hand that travel easy is a priority with busy toddlers and I’ve always got my purse and the diaper bag stocked so that we can have a healthy option when hunger strikes.
We’ve been loving Somersaults Sunflower Seed Snacks lately and the individual snack bags are perfect for on-the-go snacking. They are 100% nut free (and made in a nut free facility!) with sunflower seeds being the main ingredient. Sunflower seeds are packed with protein, fiber, vitamin E, and healthy fat. I also love that they are non-GMO verified and certified vegan. With 4 flavors there is sure to be one to please everyone in your family; Dutch Cocoa, Cinnamon, Sea Salt, and Salt & Pepper.
